James Welsh Pepper born in Philadelphia 1858 and started as a music publisher by 1880's. In 1882 was working with H. Diston and Slater. In 1883 he started importing instrument which caused a controversy and litigation with Conn. During the 1880s the brass instrument production was 100,000 instruments. The trade names are American Climax, American Favorite, Excelsior, Imperial, Premier, Special, Specialty, Surprise, Standard, Twentieth Century. Established J W Pepper and son in 1910 at which point all instruments were imported.
